Intravenous Fluid Therapy
Intravenous Fluid Therapy is the treatment for horses that suffer from dehydration due to illness or injury. When a horse is dehydrated it often takes 40 to 80 liters of fluids daily to rehydrate and maintain them, until they are well enough to drink on their own.
Catheter maintenance is one of the most critical elements of continuous intravenous fluid therapy, and the primary reason this treatment is challenging in a typical farm setting. Horses receiving intravenous fluid therapy at WCEC are continuously monitored by our veterinary assistants. Intensive Care is available with 24-hour continuous monitoring.
